Another reason to get to George Town before 7 to 10 days of windy squally weather set in, was so we could be somewhere with facilities and also the Bahamas Family Regatta was on and we would have some pleasant activities to attend. The boats that are raced are all handmade and with each island sending a few boats to compete. They are an old fashioned sloop rig, Bahamian design, that require close to 10 crew members to act as ballast as they fly round the course. We had a mark just of our stern on the first day and got a great view of the boats on the course and having to jibe right on us. Very fast and really entertaining to watch. Haven't a clue who won....

As with any sailing regatta there are always the onshore activities happening, with a carnival like atmosphere we wandered around the regatta area, which was lined with food and drink stalls all making the best Conch Fritters, Conch Salad, Conch This, Conch That (there's a heck of a lot of conch around here) and at 4 for $1 we managed to put away quite a few of the Conch Fritters. Yummy.....  It was also fun just to sit back and people watch as the Bahamian women who unlike the mass of grotty yachties were dressed to the nines, high heels, hair do's with bright colours streaked through them, bright coloured clothes, jewellery, just amazing.

But the special treat was still to come with the Junior and Senior Police Band set to perform. Why is watching a band such a treat you ask? Well the senior band wears leopard skins, yes real leopard skins or so we are told. So we waited along the road side for a couple of hours watching and then music finally started and out strutted the band and my first thought was "Oh No" as they weren't wearing "JUST" leopard skins as I had imagined (or hoped) but the main drummers in the band had a leopard skin tunic over their uniforms.... Still impressive but I wasn't to be disappointed for long as they got into the grove of things and played and danced unlike any other marching band we'd ever seen before. They were so cool and had the crowd going just like a rock concert. I have included some video footage of them a must see.
