We departed Rome in our hire car (more accurately it was a delivery van with seats...very truck like) and made our way up to Siena. Its like all the things you imagine in an Italian Tuscany area. After hiking up a very steep street we made our way into the walled city of Siena. The temperature had dropped considerably so our first option was to find a nice resturant and a hot meal which we had no trouble doing. After feeling considerably refreshed we started to wander the charming streets of Siena. Great food shops with fabulous displays, churches, designer stores etc filled the city. We figured this must be a fairly upmarket area of Tuscany because of the amazing shops. While Gill and I were happy to browse in the windows and make the odd regional food purchase, Pete and Dave looked at the structure of these old buildings and how they were put together. It was to be a common theme for them over the next few weeks. The boys were happy to wander aimlessly taking in the sights and hoping that we wouldnt drag them into yet another church.
Siena was one of those little gems that you discover. We hadn't planned to go there, but some friends we met mentioned it was a great little place. Wow, it really was a fantastic town , with so much charm and history.
