Flag of Italy  , Sardinia,
Monday, September 1, 2008

Arrived in the Southwest of Sardinia to the most amazing looking coastline with white sand beaches and huge granite boulders cascading down into the blue water. Looks just like the postcard pictures. As we made our way around the bottom of Sardinia we anchored in small bays, swam and enjoyed the 35+ degree heat.
We slowly made our way round to Cagliari to meet Pete's sister Alison. Tied up at the marina near some Kiwis, John and Liz on their new yacht. Nice to talk to someone from down south. They were starting to make their way out of the med already, heading for the Caribbean then onto the Pacific and back to NZ.
Once again we were not able to accurately determine where we would be at a certain time. When Ali first asked to come over we thought we would be in Greece by then but as usual were way off. So Ali made plans to spend a few days in Greece on her own and then get over to Sardinia which is not that far as the crow flies but a lot different by planes and ferries. So after organising her rerouting she managed to make it to Naples but missed her ferry to Sardinia, so she had to wait another day to catch a plane to Cagliari. Although she did get to see Pompeii as a bonus.
Cagliari is a beautiful old town with very steep hill. The top of the hill is the site of the ancient city and as with most of the old European cities, it is ringed by a fortified wall. It's something completely foreign to us in Australia to have cities built inside walls to protect from invading armies. Much of the Med is like this. It must have been a hard time to live, with constant fear of invasion and war.
There are a great variety of shops and cafes that lined the harbour front. After strolling through the city and exploring the narrow streets and old cathderals we stoped and had an icecream at another amazing Gelato shop. They do great icecream in Spain and Italy!

From Cagliari we spent the next 5 days sailing up the south and east coast of Sardinia to Olbia.
