Far from fighting off fine establishments all intent on putting us up, we were lucky to find the functional and friendly Nunnery in the centre of Bamako to call home for a few days. Despite the man-hating holy ones having a few words with Stu when he accidentally smashed a glass, we stayed there in the thick of the rat race but who knew, nestled in the central yet serene surroundings of the place.
Perhaps unsurprisingly as it is the capital of Mali, the city is soooo hectic but has a certain charm about it. and as we pushed on out of town to explore outlying areas a more relaxed and appealing area unfolded. Scattered with streets that barely pass as such and seem the same all over town, markets and much to see and do, it struck us straight away that we were in the capital city of the forth poorest place in the world.
With people lining the streets lounging instead of working and women working to the bone with babies all over the place, poverty was as always upsetting. It strikes you when you least expect it but is a constant concern you cant ignore.
