Yep, Bremen.... home of Beck's beer.... of course Beks had to go to Beck's factory!!
But, no that's not the only reason why i came to Bremen.... mainly it was to catch up with Eva! And to explore her city, too!
Bremen is actually a rather nice city, in the north of Germany. It has a rather nice river flowing through it, and plenty of open spaces... and lots of very cool sculptures! Also, a very cool and interesting historic tale of the Bremen town musicians... consisting of a donkey, cat, dog and cockrel (rooster)... oh well here's a bit from Wiki on it.....
In the story a donkey, a dog, a cat, and a rooster,
all past their prime years in life and usefulness on their respective
farms, were soon to be discarded or mistreated by their masters. One by
one they leave their homes and set out together. They decide to go to Bremen, known for its freedom, to live without owners and become musicians there.

On the way to Bremen, they see a lighted cottage; they look inside
and see four robbers enjoying their ill-gotten gains. Standing on each
others backs, they decide to perform for the men in hope of gaining
food. Their 'music' has an unanticipated effect; the men run for their
lives, not knowing what the strange sound is. The animals take
possession of the house, eat a good meal, and settle in for the evening.

Later that night, the robbers return and send one of their members
in to investigate. It is dark and he sees the eyes of the Cat shining
in the darkness. He reaches over to light his candle, thinking he sees
the coals of the fire. Things happen in quick succession; the Cat
swipes his face with her claws, the Dog bites him on the leg, the
Donkey kicks him and the Rooster crows and chases him out the door,
screaming. He tells his companions that he was beset by a horrible witch
who scratched him with her long fingers (the Cat), an ogre with a knife
(the Dog), a giant who had hit him with his club (the Donkey), and
worst of all, the dragon
who screamed in his voice from the rooftop (the Rooster). The robbers
abandon the cottage to the strange creatures who have taken it, where
the animals live happily for the rest of their days.

Well that's sort of how it goes. Pretty cool! All around Bremen you can find different statues of the town musicians, as they were gifted to different groups, for people to decorate themselves! Apparently it's good luck if you hold both the front feet of the donkey, too..... still waiting for it to come though!

Anyway it was nice to be greeted by someone when getting off the train! And since i haven't seen Eva in ages, it was great to catch up again! Sort of like a Hamilton reunion, as she flats with Inga, who i met at J's in Hamilton too!

First night was a quiet one in... catching up, few beers and relishing in German cuisine! (love cheese, meat and good bread!)  and of course getting the girls re-aquainted with Outrageous Fortune! (addictive kiwi series for those who don't know!)

Next day Eva took me out to her University, one which is rather modern, but is also an english speakign Uni (and sister Uni with Waikato in Hamilton). Good time to update the blog.... but only got as far as Bruges! (it is rather hard to be updated all the time!) Met all of her working group, found out about little mushroomy clouds around dunes in water, and then were invited to a bbq with people from her working group - really nice people, who do know how to bbq! (despite getting it going wit a hairdryer?!) haha!

Then it was Saturday, so we explored much of the city centre..... more beautiful, old buildings, a very cool area called the schnoor quarter, where every building seems as though it has a story to tell! Also along the river prominade where it was just beer garden after beer garden after beer garden and everyone enjoying the sunshine!  Also witnessed a poor, single guy who's 30th birthday it was... apparently tradition in northern Germany states that if you're still single on your 30th, you have to head to the town hall/church, and sweep the steps (for guys), while people are constantly throwing bottle tops at, to make the sweeping last longer! They can only be released by the kiss of a virgin (or these days when their time slot is up!) For girls you're supposed to polish the doorhandles... the tradition is still carried out, and spaces apparently booked months in advance from friends of the single birthday holder.... so glad i'll be heading to Croatia for mine... hopefully there's no weird but wonderful traditions there!
Also took part in and witnessed teh construction of a dutch bike that evening.... all without instructions..... we got it done though, so the beers felt even more rewarding!

Well, since the next day was the football match against England, i'll start off a new entry!

Beks :)
