Let the City of Music provide the soundtrack for Birthday week. Bek is another day older, another day that marks another year. Soon she will be old. Good thing we are taking this trip before she needs a walking frame, ha, ha. Happy 28th Birthday Bek!

Birthday week is the official way of drawing out the goodness of your birthday for just that little bit longer. New Orleans is the perfect place to celebrate Bek's birthday because it is full of amazing food! The first day we arrived we ate blackened Alligator and Po Boys (soft rolls full of whatever meat you can imagine, covered in gravy. Beef is most common but seafood is also very popular).

For Bek's actual birthday we went to the French Quarter, old school New Orleans, and wandered the streets. This area is famous for numerous things, including Mardi Gras (just before Lent every year) and Bourbon Street. The French Quarter is a beautiful area with old French, Spanish and Creole architecture and a great atmosphere. In the middle there is a great town square (Jackson) facing a beautiful cathedral (St Louis). Dinner was oysters, seafood jambalaya and chicken salad followed by choc-pecan pie and key lime tart all at the Crescent City Brewhouse. Thanks Mum and Dad for funding the night out, we loved it!

New Orleans has lots of different areas and the Garden District is another that is full of beautiful OLD houses and trendy restaurants. The Garden District was largely constructed by Yankee settlers after the Louisiana Purchase - and was in direct competition to the older Creole architecture in the French Quarter. Jesse found this amazing chocolate shop called the Blue Frog, delicious! Another interesting thing about New Orleans is that they have all these cemeteries with hundreds of crypts, it's quite a sight to drive past and wander through.

It was wet in New Orleans but not as cold as our last few days, we had a great few days eating Po Boys (check out Wikipedia for some entertaining thoughts on the origin of the name) and hanging out. We managed to catch some flicks, sleep in, eat delicious food and laugh a lot. Thanks New Orleans for being such a great city and thanks everyone else for their Birthday wishes, much appreciated.

Love to you all, the slightly older, Bek and Jesse Train

Just sat and read your blog- so fun! It is great to see the perspective of foreigners visiting our country. I especially enjoyed the blogs about California since that is where I currently live. I am actually flying to Australia next week to visit your great country. I will be seeing Sydney, Brisbane, and Cairns. Can't wait! I am sure I will find as many great things in Australia as you have found in the US!
