The plan to date goes something like this.
After touch down in D.C. we plan to roam the Shenandoah Valley, driving the Skyline Drive and part of the Blue Ridge Parkway, before making our way back up through Virginia and into Ohio. Sites to be seen include anything Civil War. Still working on some of the accommodation for this leg.
Once in Ohio, we'll be based near Lebanon in the home of a wonderful family that we're switching houses with for two weeks, from which we hope to explore. Our absent host has advised is of the great kids museums in both Cinncinatti and Dayton. The boys are looking forward to seeing the Wright brothers plane in the Aircraft Museum in Dayton
After our time is up there, we're going to drive down to the Mammoth Cave region in Kentucky and stay in a Wigwam for two nights. We plan to go to Kentucky Downunder and see the Australian animals ?? and the beautiful cave there before heading west to Daniel Boone Forest for two nights in a log cabin. My dd is hanging out to to the Kentucky Horse Park so we'll try and squeeze that in too.
From the forest we will drive into NC and pay the Cherokee Indian Reservation a visit. We have two nights in a basic cabin in a park down there.
The next day is sketchy as I'm revising our itinerary at present as I was going to meet a friend in Savannah GA but it isn't going to work out. If we don't hit Asheville then, we'll do it on the way up if our route takes us that way as we hope to take a tour round EcoHaven - a green building eco village, and look at some of their structures.
Next, is very exciting as we're going to meet up with a blog friend in GA. We're staying in Chattanooga. We hope to visit Chickamauga where her dd is putting together a progam for us :) More civil war sites - my son's are soooooo excited - and to be meeting 'A' their cyber buddy!
And that, is where I'm at. I've another week to plan for which will take in a trip to Raleigh to meet a dear friend, en route to the airport. I'm currently researching Williamsburg VA ... any tips most welcomed. If anyone has any advice on places to see or any hsbs would like to meet for a coffee, we'd love to hear from you!
Will post the grand plan before we depart.
