We never planned on spending time in Santiago but, Cynthia happened to be in town for a couple days on her way to Mendoza, where we would be spending Christmas together. So we left Olmue a day early and bused out to find Cynthia at her hotel, where she allowed us to take much need showers. We only had from about 2-10pm to spend in the city before we would catch our overnight bus to Mendoza, but we definitely made the most of that time.
Having a real adult with a job and eagerness to experience what sights and eats a city has to offer is great, especially one that happens to be your mother. We got to go up to a giant hill / mountain where you get 360deg views of the city, and of a statue of the Virgin Mary that sits atop. The hill is popular as a city park where many cyclists race up and down all day in the heat. We took a cab and Cynthia treated us to a sweet tea with peaches and oats in it and empanadas.
After this "overview" of the city, we focused on the Bella Vista neighborhood, which is supposed to be a cute sort of bohemian area. Somewhere in the middle of this we found some artisan shops filled with nice jewelries and woolen wears. By the time we finished here we had worked up an appetite, and settled on a nearby restaurant named after the book, "Como Agua por Chocolate." Ceviche, steak, tuna tar tar, pisco sours... all amazing. Stuffed, we cabbed to the bus terminal where Cynthia left us to catch an 8hr bus to meet her again (she would fly), in Mendoza.
