Erratic Rock is the name of the climbers hostel we stayed at in Puerto Natales. It, and the bar / gear rental station next door, are run by a couple of American's (I think all from Oregon). It was $18usd each per night, which was a discounted price given to us because we were going to be AMA volunteers (regularly $20usd) This is already our daily budget and we haven't even gotten food but, they give a daily presentation on the Torres del Paine "W" hike, free breakfast (homemade bread and jams, yogurt, cereal, and an omelet- impressive by hostel standards), and being volunteers, we were given free round trip bus tickets to the park- which we needed since we missed the employee bus. Plus, it's just a nice, comfortable place that we were told we had to stay at by the AMA boss.
I highly recommend staying here for anyone traveling through Puerto Natales, if it is in the budget. If it is not, then just go next door to their bar/rental store called Base Camp for the free info session before you go into the park. Afterwards, stay for some, well priced, tasty food and beer and talk to some other people heading into the park so that you can split packs of food, find donated half full gas cans, and rent any last minute gear you decide you may need.
We actually stayed here again on our way out of the park. That time though, we stayed in the extra room above the bar for free (well we gave them a bottle of wine). They are really generous with the AMA volunteers in this way, and had another girl staying there all season just helping out and giving some of the info session talks.
Puerto Natales itself seemed to us to be a rather dead, washed up looking town with many overpriced gear shops. The only reason to go there is to then go to the park. With its friendly, helpful owners and staff, Erratic Rock hostel and Base Camp bar was a nice way to close out our whole Torres del Paine and AMA experience, and a welcome opportunity to sleep in a real bed and take a hot shower.
