. We rode out about 40 minutes and then we spotted the "blow" from the whales. Usually they see Gray Whales but today we saw the Humpback Whales. These whales feed in Monterey Bay and surrounding waters during late spring, summer and fall. The whales move throughout the area with their primary food (fish and krill), therefore these feeding whales are not in the same areas each day. During their 10,000 mile migration they do not eat much and so the whales spend most of their time feeding once they reach this destination. The waves were starting to pick up and the boat was idling so it was very bumpy and hard to focus the camera to take pictures but Kevin and I tried our best. Kevin even fell on deck due to the boat rocking. At one point the Humpback Whale passed within 50 ft from our boat it was fantastic. They are magnificent animals. Once we got back into shore, we went to an observation deck and saw a sea otter floating his back trying to break a clam on his belly. It was fun to watch. We also saw some harbor seals. We had some delicious clam chowder this evening. Yum Yum! Tomorrow we head up to San Francisco...
We slept in a little today since our whale watching tour wasn't until 1 pm. It was a beautiful sunny day with a lot less wind then yesterday. The ocean swells were at least 9 feet yesterday due to a 30-40 mile an hour wind, today it was 10-20 mph. We purchased our tickets at Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey Bay and boarded our vessel the Clipper. Kevin saw the marine biologist who narrated our trip on National Geographic a few weeks ago. Apparently when he was out on a tour there were some Orca's (Killer whales) trying to separate a Gray Whale mom from her baby. This took place for about 4 hours. So Kevin had his picture taken with this celebrity of Marine Biology. He was very informative during the 3 hour tour. Leaving the harbor we saw hundreds of California Seal Lions on the rocks and buoys. They sun themselves on the rocks and it is comical watching them fight for the best rock. It was a bumpy ride and we got quite wet from the waves. We were glad we bought the coats last night! A couple of the other passengers did not enjoy the trip near as much as we did as they were "hurling" the entire ride
