The place where noone leaves - including me!
Entry 6 of 7 | show all | print this entry |
Day 106 - I booked a ticket through the hotel for the 7:30am bus, but they failed to tell me I get picked up an hour before - I was just going out for breakfast at 6:30 when the hotel worker stopped me and told me my bus was here! It was damn lucky I was up and packed, and even luckier there was food at the bus station! Before we departed, a very chirpy Khmer girl looked at me as she got on, and when I smiled back she quickly came to sit by me - and I could tell that I was in for 6 hours of helping someone practise English! I was not in the mood! Luckily she got off for some water and in the meantime another kid sat by me!
The journey was fairly nice and we arrived in Phnom Penh around 1:30pm where I was picked up by Lee and returned home to the Lazy Fish, once again! Turns out that Mikey was returning from Sihanoukville later in the day and Tim and Goodge the day after - this guesthouse is like a magnet! But I will be happy to see them again!
After some lunch Lee and I went to watch the live Khmer boxing as it was something I wanted to see before I left, especially after the disaster last time! There were 7 fights ranging from 15 year olds to rather powerful looking adults and anything goes - one fight saw a pretty nasty elbow strike to the face and immediately blood came spurting from the opponents eye! It was pretty cool!
I spent the evening the Lazy Fish way: chatting and playing pool. There was one of the most intense thundertorms I have ever seen, which lasted nearly all evening, and Mikey picked me up and carried me outside where I was drenched within a minute!
Day 107 - Once it had passed 9am, it was too hot to sleep anymore. Mikey and I went to the central market as we both had run out of clean clothes. We bought some fruit and took it back to the guesthouse to eat it in the hammock. I had a dinner of rice and poached eggs and ketchup, which everyone laughed at, but I'm sticking to the bland food until my stomach improves!
Day 108 - Watched 'This is England' in the morning and after lunch, Lee and I went to the air conditioned mall for some pizza. I saw the funniest thing - 3 middle aged women trying to get on the escalator, who clearly had never done it before! I was in complete histerics - I really have never seen anything like it before!
The evening was the usual - I have met some people at the Lazy Fish that I am glad to have met but will be sad to leave, especially as I will probably never see them again! That's been one of the hardest things travelling so far, and the longer I travel for, the harder I am finding it to let go and go it alone! As it was Mikeys last night also (he had been there for 3 months!) he had bought some red wine for everyone to share and the staff and tuk tuk drivers all joined in, wanting to give him a good send off! However, as they are not used to red wine at all, they all got hilariously drunk - Borei danced the macarena before him, and another driver John, were both sick in the lake!
Day 109 - Woke up at 5am to get the bus at 6:30am to Bangkok, and had two cats screeching and running about over the tin roof as an alarm clock. I had to wake Mikey up as I could hear him snoring from outside his room at 5:45! Leaving was devastating! I was sad to leave, knowing this was the last time, but I felt emotional for Mike, as him and the staff had become so close and they were all so sad to see him go! We both sat on the minibus feeling pretty gutted and not talking a lot!
