Hello Vietnam!
Entry 1 of 13 | show all | print this entry |
Day 59 - Despite my poorly episode in the night, I woke up feeling a little better and decided it was now or never to catch the bus to Vietnam and leave Phonsavan finally. It later became apparent that I was not entirely recovered and as I felt rotten all day on a stuffy bus I also felt quite shifty lying at the Vietnam immigration that I did not have any of the SARS symptoms (when in fact I had most of them!) Still they let me in and we continued the long journey to Vinh in the East of Vietnam. The scenery was some o the most beautiful I've seen - karst mountains and bright green rice fields. We only really stopped once, in a small non English speaking town where I managed to obtain some bread and a kind of meat soup for lunch, which was good, despite the meat not being specified... or apparent!
The journey took 12 hours in total as we arrived in Vinh at around 6:30pm. A nice man approached me off the bus and took me to his restaurant at the bus station where he sorted me out some noodle soup and a bus ticket to Hanoi. I decided to continue to Hanoi tonight as I didn't want to waste another day. The bus departed at 10:30pm and was reasonably comfortable with reclining chairs and a blanket although any sleep I got was interrupted by serious pain-in-the-neck and I alternated between sweats and shivers throughout the night - travelling is not always a holiday you know!
