Day 196 - Woke up fresh as a daisy for the first time in days and had time to walk to the beach after breakfast, such a great way to wake up. On the way to Raglan we stopped at Peroara, which has a giant statue of the famed local drink L & P (lemon and Peroara) - which I felt I had to try and sample while I was there - as well as some great public loos that give you a 10 minute time limit and talk and play music to you - quite a pleasant experience!
Raglan is a lovely town surrounded by green rolling hills and the sea in almost every direction, being a pinnacle of the island. We only had a little time in the town itself, which is full of neat cafes and boutiques, before driving a few kms away to our isolated hostel. The hostel is a lovely set up of wood bungalows, located in the hillside with a view of the sea and surrounded by native bush - it's lovely, but a little limited if you were to stay here more than one night. Raglan is a world reknowned surf spot, but with the weather being showers to storms, today was not the day to learn! Instead I walked down to the coast, to Whale Bay (where Jack Johnson and Ben Harper have holiday houses) and the sea was gorgeous - dramatic place to sit and take in the sound of the huge rolling waves - another sight equal to the south island. I sat and enjoyed being by the sea for a while before spending an evening chilling in the hostel as a storm blew outside. Also had some great entertainment of one of the german girls on our bus getting very drunk and devouring Thumper - he looked so embarassed it was priceless!
