Day 194 - Left Wellington with Spike as my driver again. Basically drove all day up to Auckland and so was a very boring day. The landscape is definitely less dramatic in the north island than the south - lots of cleared land for pasture and a fair bit of soil erosion as a result.
Best part of the day was when Spike drove along the bus lane and skipped all the traffic going into Auckland - he is naughty! Having stayed 4 nights in Nomads in Wellington, I got a free night at The Fat Camel - and if it wasn't free I'd be inclined to move... it's the worst hostel yet! It basically is set up as apartments, with 5 rooms (ours being a very small 8 bed dorm) branching off a very dirty and ill equipped kitchen - which even has a family of cockroaches staying!
JAFA is what Spike referred to Auckland as - basically implying it a very impersonal, international city (and no representation of NZ whatsoever). For dinner I went for the free portion of spagetti bolognese in the bar (and with the donation of another coupon from a fellow guest the two servings almost made a reasonable size meal. I sat with Spike and Thumper (who is my driver for the north island would you believe!) in the bar and Spike was on a mission for a raucous night. After Queenstown and Wellington, I was in need of a quiet one and slowly snuck away and enjoyed having the room to myself for a change.
