Sailing the Whitsundays! Tues 8th April
Entry 48 of 68 | show all | print this entry |
We spent the morning sorting out our stuff and getting ready for the sailing trip. The car had become quite a mess and as the campsite owners said we didn't have to rush to check out at 10:00, we used the opportunity to have a bit of a tidy up. As the sailing trip is BYO, we popped over to Liquor King and bought some wine, beer and soft drinks. We were all set. The campsite owner drove us to Shute Harbour, where we would meet the boat. We arrived at 14:15 and had to hang around a while as they were running late. We hired stinger suits and finally, at just before 16:00 (should have been 15:00) we were able to board the yacht (the "Condor" - a maxi class racing yacht, the only boat to have won every single sailing race twice!) We dumped our stuff in our room and after safety instructions, introductions and boat rules (no Speedos, James Blunt songs, etc) we were free to enjoy the ride. The yacht is a racing yacht and so therefore quite basic. They squeezed 29 people into the bunks below (for an ocean going race she would have 25 crew) . There are two toilets, a shower and a kitchen. We spent the two hour journey to our first stop, Hook Passage, lazing on the deck and making the most of the last rays of sunshine before it set. The crew, Aaron the captain, Craig & John, anchored the yacht when we arrived at Hook Passage. It was time to get the beer and wine out . We enjoyed a snack of cheese and biscuits, while the crew were cooking dinner. Dinner was a buffet of boiled potatoes, salad and chicken. After a few more wines and a bit of star gazing we went to bed. The party continued and so I was thankful for my earplugs!
