We made it back to Cairns
Entry 42 of 67 | show all | print this entry |
I didn't get much sleep last night because it rained heavily all night. It was really noisy and also things started to get a little wet. I was worried that we would wake up in a flood! But it was fine, just very wet! We checked with the reception staff if they recommended we head to Cairns after the night of heavy rain but they seemed to think it would be ok, saying that as soon as the rain stops, the water comes down. So we packed up and set off. It was a gloomy day and the beaches were not really enticing us. We thought it would be better to head back to Cairns, where the weather is a bit better and then we'd have plenty of opportunities to explore some nice beaches. We hit one obstacle along the way, when we pulled up to a flooded creek. There were a couple of cars parked, negotiating the road and weighing up whether their car would make it through or not. I was immediately nervous as the last thing I wanted was to flood another car! I was keen to wait and see if the water level would come down. A few cars took the risk and passed through without any problems but I was still nervous as our car is small. I paddled through the water to see how deep it was and it almost reached my knees. I still wasn't prepared to take the risk, even though Mike thought it would be ok. We must have waited there almost an hour, along with some other hesitant people, when a 4WD pulled up. The man inside ran one of the local tours and assured us that with our car we should be fine as long as we go through the water in second gear and follow the direction that he goes in. So with that, we decided to go for it. I stayed out of the car as I couldn't bear to be trapped in the event of a flood! Mike passed through without any problems and we were on our way again! Along the way, we stopped off at a museum, which breeds butterflies. We saw lots of butterlfies and moths flying around inside a mesh building. They also had boxes of dead moths, butterflies, beetles, stick insects, scorpions and all sorts of insects. Outside the museum, on their plants, lived different types of stick insects, including the peppermint stick insect. Mike got the pleasure off holding two stick insects! A bit further down the road, we stopped at Daintree ice cream company. I was expecting there to be rows of different flavours on offer but they only offer four flavours in one cup. I guess they change the flavours each day. The main attraction is the beautiful setting, as it's set in pretty gardens but as it was pouring with rain at this point, we couldn't appreciate it as much. After about a three hour drive, we arrived back in Cairns and found a campsite. After setting everything up, we went into Cairns city centre and had a look around the shops. We then went for dinner and came back for an early night as we have an 06:30 start tomorrow!
