The sun is shining in Santiago - Sun 23rd March
Entry 36 of 87 | show all | print this entry |
Yesterday was mostly spent travelling to Chile. After Mike got a one pound haircut and I a five pound massage, we got a taxi to Cusco airport at lunchtime for our first flight to Lima. Considering it was only a domestic flight, the check in process took forever - probably the longest waiting time to check in that I've ever experienced! Once we got to Lima, we had a five hour wait until our next flight to Santiago, so with 50 Soles each to spend, we passed the time doing some airport shopping. We finally arrived at our hotel in Santiago at 04:00 this morning. After sleeping until midday, we went out to explore the city. As it's Easter Sunday a lot of places were closed, so we were quite limited with what we could do. Some of the shops were open and we strolled up to the main centre point, Plaza de Armas, where we sat and had lunch outside at a restaurant on the square. We sat with a bottle of Chilean Sauvignon blanc, watching people pass by in the afternoon sun. Later, we enjoyed a massive ice cream from of the many gelatarias, which are dotted around everywhere in the main shopping area. There are also lots of fast food joints, offering everything from hot dogs and pizza to chicken and burgers. After being told that Chile was an expensive country to visit, we were pleasantly surprised to discover that everything was cheap - we found it to be cheaper than Brazil! In the evening, we walked to Cerro Santa Lucia, which is a beautiful house, set on a hill, with baroque terraces and turrets and surrounded in pretty landscape. If you walk to the top of the hill, you can see panoramic views of Santiago city but we after shortly before they were closing and we unable to enter the top. But we got a glimpse of the house and fountains and took a few photos before the gates closed. We spent most of the evening wandering the streets of Santiago and then settled on an Italian restaurant opposite our hotel for dinner. We both had pasta and half a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is lovely and cheap too!
