Cusco - Sun 9th March
Entry 24 of 87 | show all | print this entry |
Woke up to a beautiful, warm, sunny day and we both felt much better and fully recovered from altitude sickness. My friend has relatives in Peru and her auntie lives in Cusco, with her two housemaids, so we popped in to say 'hi' but because they don't speak English and we don't speak Spanish, it was difficult to communicate. She showed us her rooftop terrace, which has amazing views of Cusco! It was so kind of her to let us in, despite the language barrier and the fact she didn't know us. After, we went to explore Cusco town centre. There is so much impressive architecture - Spanish buildings built on top of Inca ruins. It's all very ornate. We visited churches such as Santa Domingo, Compania de Jesus and San Blas, which sits at the top of a hill overlooking Cusco. We went to Plaza de Armas, which is the main city centre square, where the impressive Cathedral dominates. We then strolled to nearby Plaza Regocijo, which is a smaller square. There was some sort of local political event going on and so it was very lively, with a live band playing. We sat outside a cafe and had a drink and an ice cream dessert, while absorbing the atmosphere of the square. In the evening, we went for dinner at an Indian restaurant - one thing I have missed, while being away is spicey food! Being the first Indian we'd seen, while on our travels, we were both keen for a curry! We then went to a bar called Witches Garden, just off Plaza de Armas. But being a Sunday night, it wasn't very happening. The bar had a stack of games and so we just sat and had a quiet drink, while Mike tried to teach me chess! It wasn't as difficult as I always thought!
