When Mike went rock climbing in Rio, the guide recommended Flamego beach in Salvador. Salvador has so many different beaches, that without any recommendations, it would be difficult to know where to start. Although Flamengo wasn't the closest beach on the map, we thought it would be worth making the effort to see. We got a bus to Estacio Mussuranga and then changed and got another bus directly to Flamengo beach. All in all, the journey took about 1.5 hours. It was a beautiful beach and unlike many of the beaches in Salvador, it is set back from the road, so it's very peaceful. As it was quiet, it was the first time that Mike and I could both go into the sea together (usually one of us watches the bags while the other swims). We still had a close eye on our things but it was great fun jumping in the waves.
The journey back was a nightmare! It took almost three hours, largely due to the rush hour traffic. But the bus seemed to go down every street in Salvador and stop at every stop! When we finally made it back, we went to dinner at a restaurant around the corner. We had steak, rice, beans and chips - it was lovely and cheap!
