Rock climbing on Sugar Loaf - Fri 29th Feb 2008

Rock climbing is popular in Rio, particularly at Sugar Loaf mountain. Mike, being a keen and advanced climber, took advantage of this opportunity and booked a day to climb Sugar loaf. I chose to relax on the beach instead. We were blessed with another beautiful day and so it was the perfect opportunity to top up my tan. First, I went shopping and bought some lunch and took it to Ipanema beach. The beached was packed and full of activity, with volleyball, tennis and football - everyone enjoying the sunshine. The locals were coming around selling anything from jewelry to straw bags, sunglasses, bikinis to hammocks, as well as the usual drinks and snacks. My relaxed state was soon interrupted, when I pulled my back as I reached to put sun cream on my shoulder. It was painful and all I could was lie down, praying that I'd be able to get up again! After a while, the pain eased and I was able to get up and walk around. I was relieved that I would be able to make it make to the hostel ok - don't think I could have handled the embarrassment of being stuck on the beach, unable to move! Mike hobbled through the door soon after I got back. He had a huge bulge on his ankle, where he'd sprained his ankle climbing. Mike rarely injures himself climbing so it was unfortunate but at least it wasn't broken. I went to the supermarket and bought him some frozen peas to try and bring the swelling down. We sat outside on the bench for a while so Mike could rest his foot. One of the hostel workers, a friendly Portuguese woman, helped by bringing ice and some anti-inflammatory gel. With my back and Mike's ankle, neither of us were in the fittest of states! After resting, we went to a nearby restaurant called Porćão. The taxi driver who had dropped us off at the hostel the other day recommended it to us but it's more expensive that the average restaurant in Rio. As it was our last night in Rio, we went as a treat. It has an all you can eat buffet of things such salad, soup, paella, shellfish, rice and the waiters bring round skewers of different kinds of meat. The quality was excellent!
