My two incredibly fabulous friends from Canada, Kristi and Jessica, made the long journey to meet up with me in Zambia. After an orientation to Lusaka, we set off for Southern Province to meet up with two of my Women for Change colleagues in rural Mazabuka for a day. A little chaos at the Lusaka intercity bus station and a couple of hours later we were dropped on the side of the road in Mazabuka town. Later in the afternoon we got in the truck and made the bumpy drive off the main road into the villages. We stayed at one of Women for Change's development centres and spent some time with the local residents over dinner. Jess really REALLY loved the washroom facilities. Actually, it was a pretty nice pit latrine! Kristi wasn't too happy with some spider friends that were sharing our room. We spent the following day driving throughout the surrounding villages as my coworkers mobilized a mix of adults and youth to participate in a week of training on human rights and entrepreneurial skills that would start a few days later. I've been lucky enough to travel throughout Zambia for work and spend a lot of time working with rural communities, and it was really great to be able to share this with my friends. Jess tried to make friends with some children in one of the villages but they ran away screaming. The poor kids, the only white people they see are nurses so they were understandably afraid that we were going to start giving them injections or something.
