I bet you're all really, really, really, really, REALLY excited about christmas aren't you? :) I am! I'm really hoping Santa finds me in Thailand!
I've had a really relaxing, but very interesting week in Thailand. Most of it was spent up in the north in Chiang Mai, but I came back down to Bangkok (on a very uncomfortable, cold train!) on Sunday. My friends and I went to a HUGE weekend market called Chatuchak on Sunday afternoon. It's so big that every weekend about four hundred thousand people go shopping there! That's a lot of people! You can buy anything from clothes, to chopsticks, to all kinds of food and drink, and even puppies and kittens! Up in Chiang Mai I went and stayed at a temple for two whole days, to learn about meditation from Buddhist monks! Does everyone know what meditation is? I wasn't too sure so don't feel bad if you don't know! The monks taught us that meditation is kind of like exercising your mind, just like we exercise our body. Lots of people use meditation to also give their mind a rest. The monks taught us a very simple way of meditating. We sat on the ground with our legs crossed, our hands on our knees, and our eyes closed. When we breathed in, we said "in" in our head, and when we breathed out, we said "out" in our head. We would do this for about ten minutes at a time, and it's much more difficult than it sounds! Try to only think about saying "in" or "out" - you'll find lots of other things pop into your brain and make you forget what you're doing! The monks call this "monkey mind" which I thought was very funny. I have a monkey mind!
The monks also taught us a little about Buddhism. They taught us that Buddhism is more of a philosophy than a religion, meaning they don't worship or pray to a god
I also went to my first ever Tai Chi class in Chiang Mai. Tai Chi is a martial art, like karate, but it's much slower and calmer than karate. It's about relaxing, instead of fighting. I was wandering past a temple and a group of people were about to start a class, and invited me to join, so I did! I really enjoyed it, and felt like it was a very good way to stretch! I'm in Bangkok for three more days, and then I'm going to the south of Thailand to celebrate christmas on an island called Ko Samui. I'm going to spend christmas on the beach! Very strange!
