I have been in this lovely city for three days now, and it's been amazing! To get here we travelled four hours by bus from Luang Nam Tha to a place called Huay Xai (why zye) to catch the a slow boat down the Mekong River to Luang Prabang. The boat took two whole days!
You can see from the pictures that there is jungle on both sides of the river, all the way to Luang Prabang. It was so beautiful. Most of the time we couldn't see any buildings or other people at all, but occasionally we'd catch a glimpse of a tiny village, almost hidden in the jungle. The houses were like very small wooden huts with straw roofs. There were usually only about 6 or 7 houses grouped together, very tiny communities
We enjoyed guessing what life would be like in these little villages. For example, everything they eat they would have grown or fished for themselves, because there are no grocery stores in the jungle! They probably don't have running water, and we know they definitely don't have showers, because we saw people bathing in the river. We think that people probably live in the village they are born in until they get married, and then they might move to the village of their new husband or wife, and stay there for the rest of their life.
Do you have any ideas about what life might be like for people living in the jungle?
Laos is a very poor country, and lots of children are not even able to afford books and pens, so they don't get the chance to go to school. In Canada we are very lucky, everybody has to go to school, and the government makes sure we do. It is not the same in Laos.
There is a cool place here in Luang Prabang called Big Brother Mouse, which is where people can volunteer to read to the kids and help them learn English
If I can, I'll take some pictures at the reading center for you. I hope you're all well and enjoying my stories about Laos! I'll post lots of pictures later, the computer won't let me do it at the moment!
Talk to you soon!
PS If anyone wants to know more about Big Brother Mouse, they have a great website!
