We arrived at 7am to be told the officials only arrive at 8am so the waiting game starts!
It's immigration first, then purchase a ticket for you and the bike and then customs clearance for the bikes. No signs and hard to tell whose on charge, those in very detailed uniforms (with brades, medals and badges and caps) tend not to speak to mere mortals while those shouting instructions only officialness (is that a word?) is given away by their whip and hand cuffs! Heathrow terminal 5 this is not
It gets a bit crazy when the touts start scrambling for work, all claiming you will need their help... Phfaaa! Whatever!! We'llbe fine I say (still naive). Fights break out (literally) as they argue over you and the bikes as to whose helping who...after all we are Xmas and birthday cash all roles into one for them!
Haha being carried (all 350kg) of me and bike onto the ferry was hilarious. These guys are incredibly strong! The ferry is crazy, 3 boats all tied together and then packed to the hilt with people and goods...oh dear not a life jacket in site! People were really friendly and chatty and even the nasty whip carrying official kept checking to make sure we were ok... Haha must have looked like we are shitting ourselves. It was great fun!!
Kinshasa side was better controlled, that's what a tazer and the ol whip will do! Immigration came to us and so did customers for the carnet. All fine and really friendly, no cash parted! Only one small man from "health and sanitation" checking yellow fever docs then said the bike needed disinfecting for $20 per bike!! Eh??? I laughed said we had no cash, he was an official and persistent but eventually he got bored and moved off
Come on wee man I've been in Africa long enough now! If youre going to extort money you need to be bigger than 5ft, carry and AK or at least be in possession of a stamp or a whistle!
We drive out at 1pm (6 hourslater!) into the pouring rain in Kinshahsa...DRC border done and defeated! Buzzing, it was wild.
Didn't make it I matadi as hoped so settled on Kimpese, fuel still hard to find but all good. Even had my own room tonight!
Erm didn't relaid the DRC ha their own currency!
Duck and Kasava for dinner!
