The good spirits quickly faded, we're on the way to Benin city, ideally to by pass and stay in a " town before we go to Calabar. Distance 322km, expected arrival time 2pm.
Its a bank holiday in Nigeria so we're hoping the traffic won't be to bad...what we hadn't expected was the main road out to just be closed! It quickly dried up and was 35degress, we've moved 6km in an hour.
Again, cant fault the people, rather large bloke in his rather large Mercedes AMG 55 offers us an escort (apparently he knows a short cut out of town) we follow him for no less than 3 hours! No ones going anywhere in the worst traffic on the worst roads!
Cold drinks in traffic... A nice man also stuck in traffic bought Adrian's fanta for him...just nice.
Eventually we start to hit a bit of open road which according to our map is the teams African highway, the driving is incredible! One minute tour two lanes headin one way and all of a sudden tour one lane with 3 lanes approaching... And all at break neck speeds. Overtaking three a breast...no problems. 1 police stop with a request for a gift, none given, car and truck wrecks litter for miles and 2 dead bodies later we hit Benin city at sunset! Yep, 2 dead bodies just on the side of the road.
A real reality check on how harsh life is this part of the world. Bubble burst on the kindness of strangers.
Benin city at sunset
A tough night in hotel feloma, rather run down and the night peppers with domestic abuse in the corridor.
With every reward comes a punishment
With every punishment comes a reward! Very philosophical but a pay back for the hotel luxuries!
