Every Thursday night, the Sufis, a religious group pertaining to Islam, hold a musical night in a part of Lahore. When we arrived the air was thick with the smoke of a thousand joints and we found ourselves wandering around a graveyard that was full of people escaping their daily humdrum lives, in a way that we would go to the pub. But there are no pubs in Pakistan.

Once we found the performance area, which we had to force our way through an unrelenting crowd to reach, we were packed into a very small section where two drummers played out a thumping rhythm. They pounded out their beat for two and a half hours being joined by a trumpet player in one section and a group of head swinging dancers for the concluding hour. The highlight for me was the trumpet player. I have no idea how these guys managed to pound our their drum beats for such a long time without any rest.

For me it was tiring enough sitting cross legged on a tiny patch of floor for the duration of the show. But this is a Lahore must and is a well known part of the backpacking circuit in Pakistan.
