What I did
Crossing into Detroit, we are once again subjected to special treatment by border patrol, this time American. Off to the x-ray shed, "please exit the vehicle and stand in front of the window in the waiting room". The waiting room smelled like an overused high school locker room, ripe to say the least. But, you don't want to open the door if they are utilizing an xray machine large enough to examine the insides of a semi truck trailer. Just hold your breath Barb....
On into Detroit and down Michigan Avenue into Dearborn, home of Ford Motor Company and the largest concentration of Eastern Mediterranean people outside of, well, the Eastern Mediterranean
On to the old neighborhood, driving past my childhood home on Whitefield, past St. Linus where I spent eight years being tortured by nuns, but unmolested by priests and down Beech Daly Road to Crestwood High School, proud home of the "Chargers". Everything seemed smaller than in my memory and a bit grittier nearly forty years later. Barb was kind enough to act interested, gotta love my wife!
We drove out Edward Hines Drive along the Rouge River Parkway to Northville where my niece Kelly, her husband Scott and their boys, Mitchell and Matt, live. They have graciously given us their home to use while in town. This is the Thursday before Labor Day weekend and they are heading "up north" to their lake house this evening, giving us solitude and a comfortable home to take care of laundry, paperwork and planning. We spend some time getting re-acquainted before they head out the door for their evening commute, promising to catch up to them sometime over the weekend.
I spend the evening enjoying the big screen and amply stocked bar, while Barb soaks in the tub...Thanks, guys!
