Driving into Portland, we stopped at a fish market lon the wharf and purchased half a pound of cooked lobster meat ($30 a lb. for lump meat, $3.50 a lb. for whole live lobster) for later consumption. Portland harbor area even smells like a fishing port
Driving out of Portland, we spent the night at Wassamki Springs, a very nice campground with its own private lake, ball fields, etc. We were supposed to meet up with our friend, Troy Scott, to sail on an 88’ Alden Schooner “Windemere” out of Portland Harbor the next day. Unfortunately all the day trips were cancelled and Troy was spending the day doing errands up north in Camden where his girlfriend Hannah has a boat charter business…so, no cruise on Windemere for us.
Plans do change and we are happy to change with them. We left Wassamki Springs in the morning and headed north after a short harbor tour of Portland. We wanted to see Windemere, the Alden Schooner we almost sailed on....I drove right up on the dock next to Windemere. You know, the kind of dock area where it says "deliveries only". As they say, easier to ask forgiveness than permission. Caught some great views looking down on the majestic vessel
Our good friend, Dave Cooper, set us up with some old friends of his in Boothbay, Maine. Frank and Nora are the second generation owners of a boatyard located on the bay. They own five boats of their own and store over sixty boats on their property every winter. Frank was happy to play hooky and take us on a tour of the harbor for several hours that afternoon in his trawler. Thanks Frank! The weather was perfect and the opportunity to see beautiful Boothbay from the water with someone who was raised on its shoreline was tremendous.
Taking leave of Boothbay, we stopped and filled up on chowder and lobster rolls at a roadside stand. The seafood chowder was out of this world! Did I mention that my waistline is expanding on this trip…all that hard effort to lose some excess poundage is all for nought.
That evening we camped outside of Camden at Camden Hills State Park on the mountainside. Troy and Hannah picked us up and took us to dinner at their friends, Asa and Hannah (yes two Hannahs), in Rockport. Their were five of us, including Jimmy, a local restaurant owner. It was a delight to have a home cooked meal in a house instead of the rv
Troy drove us back to campsite after dinner. It was great to see him and but bittersweet because it was for so short a time. He had two private charters the next day and a ten day charter scheduled to leave the coming weekend....back to the races!
