1 last night in the Ghetto :

We made our way from Vegas to LA by Lux Bus America. A 5 hour bus journey across the desert from Nevada back to California again. There was a Russian hostess on board who kept us all entertained and the journey seemed to fly in. Knowing we were arriving quite late and the flight to NYC the next morning I searched the cheapest and closest place possible to LAX airport. AAE Econo Lodge/Hostel – Welcome to the Hood.

Dear Jesus, on check-in we payed by slipping our cash through the hole in the bullet proof glass to the receptionist/Drug-Lord. On the nearby streets we noticed a few prostitutes hanging about. Brilliant one Brian, this should be a quiet relaxing night. Honestly LA is 1 shit hole, maybe with the exceptions of Hollywood/Beverly Hills/Santa Monica. We couldn't wait to leave the next morning. After a quick dart to the local fast food outlet, back safe, I was out for the count exhausted, even through the screams/fights/smoke alarms going off next door. We basically paid $60 for a night in a brothel. At 6am our alarms went, poor Caoimhe had only got half an hours sleep during the mayhem of Econo/Red Light Hostel. We'd had a fantastic time in LA, especially Universal Studios and Hollywood etc, but we slipped up on our first day by taking a bus to downtown and staying in this joint at the airport.

China Man

Quantas flight to NYC lasted about 5 hours and again we went through a few time zones as we crossed over the states. Landed in JFK to sunshine and jumped into an air bus from JFK – La Guardia, no not to jump another plane thankfully but it was closer to our hotel, The Red Roof Inn in China-town, Queens. Well, we didn’t know it was china-town, again our research for USA was fairly non-existent, just wing’d it. Nice little hotel, a 2 minute walk to the nearest subway, and then half an hour had us in Times Square. Spent the first couple of days travelling back and forth into the city doing the usual tourist stuff. Bought ourselves a sight seeing bus and boat ticket which lasted for 48 hours. Done a few laps of downtown, in and around times square, madison square gardens, ground zero and central park. We got out at grand zero and I dandered around the memorial museum, but didn’t get to see the actual memorial, needed to reserve a ticket online, ah well. Last time I was at ground zero, all you can see was smoke. The new trade center looked impressive, not far of completion by the looks of it. Caoimhe was in her element shopping the bit out, clothes, food all very cheap, accommodation, very expensive.

Jamaica Man

Ideally we were after an apartment or hostel so we could cook for ourselves. We managed to find one online whilst in San Francisco. It was in Queens in Jamaica. We arrived by taxi from China-town, to meet and greet our land lady, Beverley/Big Momma from Jamaica. She was very nice, but we didn’t realize we would actually be living with her. Room was fine, except for the 1 rogue Mosquito per night, who would get murdered the next morning on every occasion.. Like seriously, mossies on the East Coast, didn’t know that. She said the recent hurricane mucked the whole river up than ran behind the house and the wee blood suckers were knocking about, here we go, Thailand all over again, we have arrived, buffet time. They were massive, like they’d fell in mutagen. Spent the 1st night hiding under the blanket, woke up next morning with my chin bit ? Ruthless wee vampires. In order for us to get to the city, it was an hour and a half by public transport, myself and Caoimhe for 3 days solid were the only white people on the bus. A lot of the residents in the area came from Jamaica and the Caribbean. We never were hassled but def felt eyes were on us seeing think bubbles, 'Are you guys on the wrong bus?’ If anything was said I had a real ice breaker line waiting, ‘We loved Cool Runnings!’

Spent another day getting the boat on the Hudson and East river overlooking Manhattan, Brooklyn, Clipper City, Wall Street, Staten and Ellis islands, New Jersey and of course the statue Liberty. The tour guide was good, and was able to go over the details of the Hudson river crash, where the pilot saved everyone on board. It was a very cold, grey day in NYC, but the views were brilliant. Rounded of an evening in Little Italy over a great Italian meal.

The weather was fairly unpredictable, had some very sunny warm days were we actually got a lot of sun, but other days were a no go, lashing flat out.

Tune: Jay&Kanye

Also spent a while around Central park, whilst Caoimhe continued her shopping rampage. Whilst in Times Square Caoimhe had caught onto to discount game happening in American Eagle. Before I knew it she had a pass around my neck, running around the shop with an Android phone, scanning it off barcodes into my Google wallet app. I hadn’t planned to shop, I ended up buying 3 pair of Jeans and a jumper haha saving $190 courtesy of Bargain Hunter Byrne. Headed to various Irish bars around the city for a few beers, great atmosphere – the Irish bars were everywhere. All you had to do was look for an alley way.

Our bite count was on the increase, so annoying. Check out time after 3 nights at Big Momma’s house. Terrible location, nice landlady and decent room. You couldn’t really make yourself at home whilst she was living there. $100 a night, nah not worth it. It did however help kit her out with new wigs and Big Momma breakfasts lol. We got a hilarious Jamaican taxi driver to the subway. He loved Cool Runnings haha, but said none of them were from Jamaica lol He told us we should have got married in Vegas. His accent was hilarious.

Hotel 91

Our final night in NYC, I didn’t care any longer about the budget or the fact it was a Saturday night, were staying in the city! Chinatown, NYC, Hotel 91, a great hotel right beside Manhattan Bridge, Little Italy and Soho. Caoimhe spent her day – you guessed it, shopping. She took on Macy’s – even looking at the size of that place gave me a headache. Meantime your man here was on the 7th floor doing the laundry. Craic.

Spent our last in and around Rocafella Centre and Times Square. Had a meal in O’Lunneys Irish bar, quality, with a great live Irish band, but we reckon we were the only Irish in that place. Felt great after not having to take on that 1.5 hour hike to Jamaica with all our mates.

Goodbye NYC

We had a great time in the city, really enjoyed it. There is a great atmosphere around New York and we will def be back some time on holidays.

Next day, I remembered a quality deal, a return bus from NYC China-town to Boston China-town I got 10 years ago. Lucky Star (with Wi-Fi on board) The deal was still on, $30 each return, you honestly couldn’t beat that with a big stick. 4 nights in Boston, back to NYC JFK then it’s home sweet home.

Flights have been moved forward 4 days, arriving home Friday 28th October, we can’t wait. We are ready for home, burning the passport and throwing my suitcase into the bin, the wheels have well and truly came off at this stage.
