Monday,September 18th Trans Siberian - day 1

Slept OK. Got at least 4 hours good sleep. Have brekkie of bread. salami and tomatoes. Same for lunch as stuff will go off. Get coffee via instant stuff in cup and using hot water from samovar (hot water cylinder - see pic) at end of carriage. Samovar real saviour for all as people live on instant noodles that 'cook' via the boiling water. Provodnitsa Olga always straightening the carpet in the carriage. Olga and Maria do 12 hours shifts for our carriage over the next couple of days.

Talk to Sarah and Gerry over brekkie and get free cheese in exchange for salami. Take walk about of our carriage and carriage number 3 which has other people in our group. Raz's cabin has a off duty provodnitsa and good craic doing English/Russia sign language to make conversation. She has enormous bucket of wild berries to eat and shares with all. Good laugh describing the cold of Lake Baikal and pictures of her family. Of course meet an Irish person - she if off on long way to Australia trip to where she is emigrating.

Train stops everyday now three times of about 20 minutes. Get to walk around and buy food off the babooskas on the platform. Get pancakes with meat or potatoes inside (think said Russian mad into pancakes), cold beer - 20 to 30 Roubles, cooked potatoes, even ice creams! They are officially not allowed to sell Vodka but do. At late stop they had to do a legger when the police turned up :>

In evening go to dining car for a couple of beers (Pivo - same word all over eastern Europe as well). Only foreigners in dining car or which Aussies make up about 80%. Dining car too expensive for Russians - I agree at 50 Roubles a bottle of beer! Better to support the locals at the stops anyway.

Back to Bill, Joanne, Sang, and Chris's Coupe for vodka and toasts (the little speeches as oppose to food). Julie and Jamie also turn up. Good craic and Bill slurring the words with more vodka. Everyone tucking into each others snack stuff. Jamie classic gets us all laughing - when getting off last stop says in real dodgy US accent 'all you need is a Starbucks here'. Ok funnier if you where here!
