Joan Miro (1893-1983) is one of the main surrealistic artists of the XXe century and is the most famous artist from Barcelona . Joan Miro and began to paint in 1912, without leaving his native town.
If Miro's works can be found in museums all over the world, however many have remained in Catalunya, mostly in the Fundacio Joan Miro. Being a complete artist, Miro used paintings, sculpture, ceramics as well as drawings or textiles works. The permanent collection contains more than ten thousand of works, mostly drawings and paintings.
Some of Miro's early work is realistic, but the most famous pieces are in his signature symbolic style, featuring stars, women and birds in striking proportions, colors and shapes. You can also admire some temporary exhibitions:

The Espai 13 is another temporary exhibition space in the downstairs of the museum, specially dedicated to youn artists' work.
Another particularity from the Fundacio Joan Miro is the mercury fountain designed by Alexander Calder. This fountain, commissioned by the Spanish government is a memorial to the village of Aldamen , a mining village assieged by General Franco's troops. Instead of water running, mercury has been used and the effect is astonishing.
Finally, the last reason to visit this museum is the building itself! This white modern building designed by the architect Sert offers an amazing view over Barcelona .
The museum is open every day from Tuesday to Sunday. Admission price is 7,5€ for adults and 5€ for reduced rates. Bus 50 and 55 stop directly in front of the museum.
