Daytona Beach is one of our favorite vacation spots. This year we have been especially eager to go there because for some time we have planned to go to Daytona Beach with Lynn and Kay Wilson. The four of us have had many great times together for the last few years. Additionally, they have been a great support to us during difficult times. They moved to Weatherford, TX about the time we began this trip. This summer Lynn and Kay will be staying in our daylight basement while they spend part of the summer in Washington. It will be nice to finally have someone living there. When we remodeled our house years ago, it was with the idea that at least one of our parents would eventually live with us and that would be their private area.
Lynn was especially eager to visit the Daytona International Speedway so that he could ride with a race driver around the track. How disappointing to learn that they are not offering that at this time of year. However, the tour of the track and facility is interesting anyway.
Jack loves going to the Root Family section of the Daytona Museum. The family was one of the original bottlers for Coca Cola many years ago in Indiana. They later moved to Daytona Beach and eventually sold the company. There is a huge collection of Coca Cola memorabilia (as if Jack hadn't seen enough at the Coke Museum in Atlanta) in addition to personal pictures, movies and items donated by the family.
St. Augustine is a city the four of us love to visit. We take the trolley tour each trip because each driver has a unique style and story about the city. One will emphasize the historical, another horticulture, another architecture, etc. It appears they are not required to follow a strict script as long as they give the historical basics. In addition to the history of the area, St. Augustine has a great street of fun and interesting shops and restaurants. This is the second time the Wilsons have been there with us and both times have been during Christmas shopping time and we find great gift shops in St. Augustine.
My favorite time in Daytona Beach is early morning (I know, I know-nobody will believe I enjoy anything early in the morning) as I watch the sun rise over the Atlantic Ocean I love to watch the crashing waves at any time of day. I also enjoy leaving the balcony door open so I can hear the roar of the ocean.
The next few days we are going to spend most of our time just resting and relaxing in Orlando. Will need the rest because Saturday we go to Rochester and will be with our three grandsons for three weeks.
