What a great place! OUr stop at China beach was much needed, it was a great place to relax and soak up some atmosphere that didn't include "Hello you buy!". You can really tell the difference between the north and the south of vietnam, the north reminds me of a little kid that just discovered candy. Anxious to get as much as possible as quickly as possible and the tourists are the candy men. It got to be a little too much and China Beach was a great place to get away from it.
We stayed in a little Hamlet close to the beach, the beach itself is huge, you can't see the end. What we did each day is hard to remember but we ended up staying four days. We spent a lot of time on the beach and even rented a surf board. It was really neat to try, a great feeling when you do catch a wave but neither of us managed to get up on the board. The evenings we spent at a GuestHouse called Hoa's Place. That was fantastic, Hoa is a great guy. His slogan is "I talk shit but no bullshit." which really is how it is. The dinners are family style, tonnes of dishes and food shared amoungst all the guests. Usually cards and beer were the entertainment for the night, one night we were there we had a bonfire on the beach, it was really nice and relaxing.
We could have easily spent more time there. We meet a few guys that had been there for quite a bit, on guy was going on two months.
On a sad note while we were there a local girl drowned and one of the guys at the guesthouse had to pull her out of the water. Apparently it's the second time he's done this at this beach. It seems not many of the locals know how to swim but the kids play in the water anyways and the beach has a strong undertow (ie the good surfing..) It was a sad way to end our stay at China Beach.
