Where I stayed
Dauphin Island is a tiny barrier island just 33 miles south of Mobile, but it might as well be in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico when it comes to the laid back, relaxed atmosphere of this inviting family destination. Miles of white sand beach is where those seeking the perfect tan mingle with fisher-folks and sailboarders. The nearby Isle Dauphine Golf Club invites both serious golfers and duffers to take on the challenging links-style 18-hole course bordering the Gulf.
The Audubon Bird Sanctuary and several other sites across the island are home to hundreds of species of domestic and migrating birds during the year, as well as other animals from "furbies to scalies"
For fish-on-the-line there are piers and docks, boat charters and launches, places to cast in the surf or along the shoreline. For fish in the tank there is the world renown Estuarium at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab where guests learn the unique workings of the local habitat through interactive displays, aquariums and the beautiful Living Marsh Boardwalk.
Historic Fort Gaines brings history to life as visitors explore this restored Civil War era fort complete with the actual cannons used in the Battle of Mobile, and exciting re-enactments throughout the year.
From vacation rental homes and resort-style condos, to camping and the family friendly Gulf Breeze Motel, there are accommodations for every budget on Dauphin Island. And, the wide variety of Island eateries offers up everything from tasty seafood and barbecue, to gourmet omelets, pastries, sandwiches, burgers and more.
Whether for a weekend getaway or a summer-long stay, Dauphin Island is truly Alabama's Family Beach.
