Flag of Argentina  ,
Tuesday, June 26, 2007

As the weeks pass by we try to become more and more Argentine as we submerse ourselves in the culture. The most recent event that we celebrated was Boca Juniors winning the Copa Libertador!!! Boca Juniors is a local soccer team here in Buenos Aires. The other main team of BsAs is River Plate; Boca and River are rivals. The best comparison we can give you is that River = Cubs and Boca = Sox. So obviously we all know who the best soccer team is here in BsAs..... dale BOCA!!!!!!!!!! (Can you tell who's updating today!?!?!)

Anyways the Copa Libertador is a tournament which comprises of local teams from South American countries which began in February and ended on Wednesday June 20th with a Boca victory against Brazil (6-0 after two matches). Needless to say this city went NUTS!!! Dan dragged me to the Obelisco (the center of the city) to watch the fans celebrate. The only word I can think of to describe the scene is insanity. On each side of the Obelisco flies the Argentine flag. Well on Wednesday night the Argentine was no longer flying but the Boca flag was flying!!! People were marching and singing and it was nice to see a celebration rather than a protest in this city for once!!! People were standing on top of the light posts and just jumping on them..... For us we are lucky because Boca's colors are blue and gold (same as Augie) so we fit right in wearing our Augie gear (minus the English writing)!!! I've never seen so much blue and gold before in my life!!!!

Many of our students the following day were smiling ear to ear (just like when the Sox won the World Series) and then there were students who didn't even want to talk about it (like the Cub fans were when we (the Sox) won the World Series)!!!! Now on a side note the fact that Dan and I are both fans for Boca is a miracle... we do not agree on ANY other sport team....

We have also taken many "weekend" walks around the city. Here in Argentine the night life begins at 2 AM and goes till the wee hours of the morning... so Dan and I have become accustomed to rolling in around 7 or 8 AM and we sleep the day away and we're lucky if we can catch a little sunlight here and there. But this past weekend I was sick with a cold so I stayed in Friday night while Dan went out for a few hours and Saturday evening we went to the Car Expo. I couldn't get over a) the amount of people b) the amount of people taking pictures and c) how close we could get to the cars, we could actually touch them!! Dan loved it because he got to see a Rolls Royce (sp?) up close and personal and actually touch the leather in the car. Personally I think the car is massive and over rated but anywho.... We had a good time and it was interesting to compare the Argentine models to the American models (I know Dan could go into more detail than I but that's about all I got....)

The big news for Daniel is after 4 months he finally got a hair cut!!! We have some great before and after shots!! He also claims that living with me is causing him to go bald; it's just his excuse.... I on the other hand am waiting till I am home for 24 hours in August to go get my hair cut, Dionne you're going to kill me when you see my hair....

Other than that we are just teaching and hanging out in Buenos Aires. Meeting new people, making new friends; it's amazing after 5 months how much our network of friends have grown and blossom. Sometimes I walk away from a class and wonder who learned more, my student or I. This is truly a learning and growing experience for Dan and I in ways we never imagined. It truly is an eye opener living in another country. To learn about other's perspectives on the world, the USA, their own country is enlightening to say the least.

So now we are just preparing ourselves for the arrival of mis padres (my parents) on Saturday!! Please keep my parents in your thoughts and prayers during their travels to and from Buenos Aires. Dan and I have started to do some "grocery" shopping for them, plan an itinerary, as well as cleaning our house from top to bottom. My parents have rented an apartment for 10 days which is 3 blocks from our house and much cheaper than staying in a hotel for 10 days!!! Their apartment is a 2 bedroom so I'll be able to spend the nights there with them and visit with them just long enough so that they're annoyed with me once again... ;)

Well that's all that's about new down here. We will post again to detail the adventures of my parent's trip and have some new pictures. Although you may not be able to see us in the pictures because it is SO cold here in Buenos Aires and we will be bundled from head to toe. It is winter officially here now and it wouldn't be so bad if it weren't 50 degrees with 90% humidity. The humidity here is just awful and makes the air that much colder, and as Dan would say it's a cold that reaches your bones.... Really it's nothing compared to a Chicago winter but in the morning I don't want to get out of bed, that's for sure!!!!

We hope everyone is doing well and enjoying your summer and HOT weather. We are jealous of the sun you are receiving!!! (we know, the tables are turned now... haha) Enjoy your summer, we look forward to hearing how you are doing and possibly seeing you in August while we're home for 24 hours!!!

We love and miss you all!! Thank you for your continued support and prayers!

God Bless

Love always,

Sarah and Dan :)

One last thing... on Thursday June 28th @ 8:45 PM (argentine time, so 6:45 PM Chicago time more or less) Argentina vs. United States in the Copa America!!! VAMOS VAMOS ARGENTINA!!!! (Copa America is the National Teams of the Americas Tournement which begins this week)
