So, my last day in Dresden, me and Helga (my trusty, multi-colored, 1 speed, Mary-poppins-like bike with a little bell on the handlebars that I borrowed form the hostel) left for a little town about 20 miles up the Elbe to do some hiking. After about 2 hours, me and helga had guten-tag´d our way to Rathen....Of course, when I first made it there, I didnt realize it and kept going. The paved bike trail I had been riding on quickly turned into a dirt hiking trail. I figured this was the right way, so I threw helga up on my shoulders and started walking. About 15 minutes later, I saw a sign that said Rathen, and was pointing the way I just came. So I turned around and walked back to the town I had just rode through. The hiking was very cool, although can hardly be considered hiking, except for that you go up. The site was a fairly huge tourist attraction, with a paved walkway to the top. Its a bunch of rock spires on the edge of the national park here that stick straight up out of the ground, some as high as 1000 feet. You get to walk on the tops of them. It was real nice. My favorite part was the GIANT hotel and restaurant at the top...So after a couple hours there I headed back, this time it took me about 3 hours because I got to ride into about a 20 MPH headwind.
When I got back, I cooked some pasta, then went to the lebowski bar with a Canadian guy and Brazilian girl I had met the night before. We had white russians. We didnt stay out very late, since we were all leaving the next day. The canadian was also headed to Munich so we decided to catch the same train. It took about 6 hours, and I arrived in Munich around 5. My hostel was right across the street from the train station, so I just walked there. This is a huge hostel, supposedly voted one of the top 10 in the world, but they dont have a kitchen, which sucks. I went to the bar for my free complimentary beer. It was an ealry night, but I met an american named John who had just finished Law school. We decided the next day we were gonna go on some freer walking tour at 11...So at 11 the next day we were the only 2 there, so the tour guide didnt really think it was worth it. Since we had showed up and didnt get the tour, he offered us the 3 PM Beer Garden tour for half price...Deal! So me and John wandered around the city until then. Theres a lot of Roman type architecture here, although it was built about 40 years ago. Theres a huge park, which we wandered into right where the nude section was, and immediately regretted the move, and after about 2 minutes we both wanted to go home and shower. Theres also a standing surf wave in the river tha runs through the park, created when they attempted to damn it, but it didnt work. Apparently american soldiers first used it during the war, and there were a bunch of people down there surfing, not really what you expect to see in Germany.  Then we walked through the city center and a huge market. Theres was a big protest going on, by a bunch of animal rights people....
We got back to the hostel just about time for the beergarden tour. There was 9 of us (couple Australians, candians, and 2 girls from Texas...), including the tour guide. He took us to about 5 beergardens and gave us a little history at each one. The one we ended up at was your typical, waitresses in lederhusen, oompa loompa band, giant tent filled with picnin tables of drunk people, Octoberfest type beer garden. Needless to say, by this point we were pretty drunk, so we commenced to stand on the picnin tables, and sing drinking songs, asking for photos with every waitress and old German couple that walked by. It was a lot fun. Sometime a couple beers later the group had disolved into the night. Me and John decided we were gonna go to the carnival outside and go on every ride there, so thats what we did. Sometime I believe around ten we made it back to the hostel and went to the bar...but didnt last very long.
Today ill probably just go the park and read or something. And figure out when Im gonna leave for Rome.
