It was a late start today - we didn't really get going until 11:00. We had brunch at a little place in Hells Kitchen and then caught the subway down to Central Park, where we spent most of he rest of the day. At first we just wandered aimlessly, but after picking up a map at the Dairy, we headed up to the literary walk and along the Mall. We tipped a guy who was selling jokes, guaranteed to make you laugh) - and yes, he made us laugh. It was very pleasant the number of things that were going on - a range of buskers performing, models having fashion shoots done, kids playing, people jogging, strolling, sketching, weddings etc. Anyway, we continued up past the Naumberg Bandstand, past the Bethesda Terrace and around the South end of the lake so we could walk through the Strawberry Fields section of the park - the area dedicated to John Lennon. After that, we proceeded on to Belvedere Castle, originally a scouting observation post, now the Central Park office of the Meteorological service. Starting to feel a little footsore, we turned back towards home, passing through The Ramble - an area of the Park that has been kept in a fairly 'wild' state, and past Loeb Boathouse - now a very pricey restaurant, bar and reception area..We walked through the Children's Zoo, but didn't stop because it was nearing closing time. It was a bit sobering to realise that even with all of the walking we had done, we had still only covered less than half the length of Central Park, and seen only a small fraction of what there was to see there. It is a real haven from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan and certainly seems well used, looked after and loved by the people. Leaving the park, we walked up 5th Avenue, stopping to do some book shopping and have a break. We made it the rest of the way back to the hotel on feet that were really starting to complain. We ordered Chinese delivery for tea and had an interesting night of catching up on the laundry.
