. Not sure what the real story was, but there was certainly a mother with a couple of young children who desperately wanted to get on the plane - but there was no way the crew were letting her on. We'll never know what the real story was - but it is clear that the mythical 'delayed passenger from Alice Springs' was just that - a myth.
It was interesting watching the progress of the U.S. Presidential election results. Three cheers to Obama for getting back in - while he may not be perfect, he does have the advantage of not being run by a party of loons - unlike Romney who seems a decent enough bloke but appeared to be backed by absolute bastards.
A smooth flight to Sydney was followed by the primitive arrangements for transfer to the International terminal by shuttle bus. Seriously Sydney, you need to get your airport sorted - there are any number of airports that know how to deal with transfer arrangements properly - this is not one of them.
I think that Qantas must put their oldest aircraft on the Hawaii route. This plane had no seat back entertainment system, and instead employed similar technology to what we saw with Qantas 25 years ago. I know that it is a 'first world' problem, but still, it makes you wonder if they are skimping in other, less visible areas as well... We might as well have flown United, who have the same primitive set-up, but are cheaper and have the option of buying 3" of extra legroom at a reasonable price.
After four hours sleep - again, it was time to do the last of the packing up and set off. A standard trip down to Tulla, we met Jason and the parents in the domestic terminal. It was interesting trying out the automated check-in system, although because we were linking up with an International flight in Sydney we still had to go and see someone to deal with the transit details. We got our boarding gate, and headed over there with plenty of time to spare for the flight. After we had all been there for about 30 minutes, we noticed that the flight number had changed. Oh - oh, what does that mean? A quick check of the departures list showed that our flight was now boarding -way over the other side of the Qantas terminal. Moments of stress ensued - crap, that will be a great start to the holiday if we miss the flight connecting us to our Hawaii flight! Of course we all rushed over to the new gate, stressing all concerned. Of course, we boarded - and then had to wait 1/2 hour past the scheduled time for a passenger supposedly 'running late' from Alice Springs
