However, by the end of the round I think he had reconciled in his mind that maybe I was right; I still have the driver!
01/05/07 - Called Doug (from Canada) and organised a midday tee-off time @ Tahquitz Creek. I enjoyed his company yesterday, better than anyone else I've met so far
Some of you, who know my golf, also know that I'm better at receiving advice than giving it. However, Doug was insistent that I help him with his iron play. He is a "sweeper" and not a "hitter" of the golf ball - which is great to watch, because it appears effortless. It works with woods but it's not as successful with irons; he fails to take divots, and most times he "thins" to the right.
So I asked him whether he had ever had an injury to his arms or shoulders. Over the years he told me, that he'd had several operations on his right wrist, to which I proposed that subconsciously he maybe protecting that wrist by not taking divots. I suggested that he should "hit through the ball, keeping your head down until well after the ball has been struck. You should find that a divot will be produce without trying." - He appeared to understand what I was saying and proceeded to hit the ball "fat".
Like I said I'm better at receiving advice than giving it!
At 4pm I met Craig on my replay round (which, by the way, was free). A big (coloured) guy who's first shot with a 4 iron was 10 yards behind my drive! But, as most of you know who play this game, the real attraction and purpose, is to "pit your wits" against the course and not your fellow competitor. And in the process, between shots, there is generally time to talk and find out more about the person your sharing this challenge with.
Unfortunately, having separate carts meant I only got the chance to chat on the tees and greens. Also, the course was "wide open" and our round only took 2 ½ hours, so I didn't get to know much about my afternoon partner. However, it always seems to be the case that big people are "gentle giants" - this guy was really polite and quietly spoken.
02/05/07 - My last day in Palm Springs which I spent @ Mesquite CC. Not a great course but what can you expect for $30?But even so, the backdrop is "awesome" (as they say over here) No playing partners and my fastest round yet @ 2 ¼ hours. After which I went to Wal-Mart bought some Wet n'Dry, some filler, masking tape and paint. Decided that I owe it to my RV to give her a slight makeover for the accident damage I've caused. (Yep, it is a SHE; most vehicles are, aren't they?).
