01/04/07 & 02/04/07 - Donna to Fredericksburg TX - (628 miles) Well the decision to head south from Houston instead of west was not one of my better ideas. The journey down the Gulf coast was in rain and up the Mexican Border was under cloud. Also, there was bugger all to see, unless you like big ranches, flat plains and very, very, very long trains!
The golf is poor by comparison (I could tell by the literature) and not much of it, because this is really Mexico, well "Tex-Mex" to be precise and they're into rodeo and farming. Golf is not high on their Agenda.Personally, I think the US/Mexican border should be a straight line from El Paso to Houston. But this would mean San Antonio would then be in Mexico and with the Alamo being here I doubt my opinion would count for much!
So I set off on Sunday @ 11.30 morning after a lazy few hours on the internet, cooking breakfast, planning my route and emptying my shit in the dump tank (a little too much info?)  First port of call Wal-Mart; I needed plasters since my new trainers had taken a layer off my epidermis!
I passed the "Falcon Dam" which is responsible for flooding many miles of Texas (well done that man or woman!) and they can affford to, it's a big state, 261,797 sq miles to be exact. Which means England, Scotland and Wales could fit inside its borders 3x over! So off I go towards this dam, and to get the best view you need to drive across. Unfortunately, across means Mexico and I'm not insured. Also, I have a fridge full of food and fruit which I couldn't bring back into the US. So I decided not to bother.
After 4 hours in the saddle I stopped for a coffee and to watch the final few holes of the Houston Open to see if my new friend, Mr Howell, had done anything. Good idea but my generator packed in after 2 mins and I needed to get to a petrol station. As luck would have it I caught the last two minutes of coverage, coz NBC had run out of airtime!
Pop Quiz - Where did David Howell finish?
Just after 5pm I headed for.... not sure where, but somewhere north of where I was. Anyway 3 hours and 3 ranches later (yes, they're BIG!) I ended up at a place called Uvalde, on a RV site with me and 2 others at the foot of a big chalk ridge, no internet, no TV reception but there was a dump tank! (enough said).
02/04/07 - Uvalde,TX to Fredericksburg. - Now for those of you who have commented on the "quality" of my blog (or lack of) I apologise. But when driving for 6 hours a day most of the things I do, are done in my head.  (ie thinking time) Most of these thoughts are mine and not for this blog.
Bypassed San Antonio and by mistake entered downtown Austin (capital city of Texas) - nice place. So, I am now just 166miles from Houston where I was last Wednesday. (This little loop round Texas has taken 5 days and approx.1100 miles)
This is Hill Country and they grow peaches and are very proud of it. But other than hills and peaches not much to see. So once again a day full of nothing but miles of roads, with brief interludes for food and other necessary pit-stops and finally an overnight stay at Fredericksburg.
