Hit the shops today - spent a lot of time looking at one of the main department stores in New York - Macy's. Graham was looking for a watch and for jeans and I had a look at some shoes. We met David and Kylie at Zegna later in the afternoon where Graham bought his jeans. The traffic in New York was evidently more chaotic this week because the United Nations were meeting in New York and George Busch had been there. Lots of streets were partioned off for security and to get anywhere by taxi was expensive and time consuming. When we finished shopping we got a mo-ped (young college negro rode a bike pulling a twin seat). It was fairly quick - 8 minutes but he ducked in and out of the traffic, against the traffic in one way streets and got us to Broadway - where we wanted to go safely. We had appetisers at a Cuban restaurant which were excellent and then went to the show - "Hairspray". I really enjoyed the music and dancing - based in the 60's and was a bit after the style of "Grease". It was really entertaining and very energetic. We went straight there from shopping all day and because it was a very warm day we were both in shorts. Graham was a bit worried about going to the theatre in shorts, but I assured him nobody would know us!!!!! How wrong I was - it is a small world!!! The man sitting next but one to me worked on a project for Mackay Sugar and knew Graham - they were from Sydney. We then wandered through Times Square and Broadway to get the feel of the city. The sound of sirens, the bustle and the conversations of the locals, the steam coming up from the vents in the roads and footpaths are all as you see and hear on TV. I would have liked to have a hot dog at one of the many carts on the sidewalk but we always seem to be eating.
