This morning we woke in Manitoba on the "Prairies" at a little town called "Rivers" - similar country to the Darling Downs and the area between Albany and Esperance.  Wheat and grain silos dotted the railway line with some cattle.  We saw lots of sunflowers and a lot of hay, some cattle. The farms didn't look too prosperous and we saw very little irrigation.  Winnipeg, the capital of Manitoba was a big city, but the weather was overcast and cold (temperatures vary from forty degrees (F) below to forty above and it is also windy ).  We didn't get out when the train stopped for quite a while to refill with food, water, staff and passengers.  We have met another lot of people from Brisbane as well as quiet a number of other people from Canada as we sit up in the domed car.  The facilities, service and train are not as good as our "Indian Pacific" train service, however it is still very pleasant and a very social, easy way to travel.  In the afternoon we crossed over the border from Manitoba to Ontario and in so doing cross onto "The Canadian Shield" country.  This area has over 200 lakes and is known for its pike, perch and lake trout fishing.  The country changed from ploughed fields to wooded and forest country with lots of lakes with houses and holiday accommodation and row boats around them - prettier country.
