Off we pop to Koh Samui, an island on the opposite coast of Thailand. So we get a coach across country then a boat to the island. The scenery on the way is glorious, with jagged outcrops of rock randomly poking out of jungle, worrying bridges, small shanty towns mixed with towering buildings and more death-defying moped riders than you can shake a stick at. After the bus ride and following boat ride across to Koh Samui, we are approached by a european couple while getting our packs on. Turns out they are heading the same way and want to share a taxi fare. Good stuff. We never find out where they are from but they are nice and the taxi ride is cheaper and more interesting thanks to them :)

We arrive. Another island, another run down grotty little hostel. Well not quite. The low season is still on our side so we have a swanky bungalow at a 3 star resort for 6 a night. Whoop! We break the bank and add on breakfast for another quid. We have a flatscreen with movies and bbc news, a pool, a restaurant and a private beach. Yes, thats right, a private beach. In fact the name of the resort is PGS Sandy Resort so it was bound to have sand! We dump the bags and head for our beach. Unfortunately the tide must be in as there is barely a foot of beach. No matter, we have a sit down and look out onto the bay until it darkens. After freshening up for our evening meal we head back to the beachfront, where we admire the distant twinkling lights and see planes come and go (Samui is a fairly big island and popular enough to demand an airport).

Waking up the following morning we head off to see what our 1 breakfast has bought us. It turns out it has bought us as much as our bellies can hold! Hurray! It's a buffet type set up with pretty much every breakfast food-stuff you could want. We eat a big breakfast. Then we eat another big breakfast.

As we have eaten our bodyweights in breakfasts, and are unbelievably full, we decide to have a relaxing day in the resort rather than venturing out. We drop onto beach loungers and notice that the tide must be coming in again (like last night) as the lapping waves are barely a foot from the feet of our loungers...... and then the tide DID come in! Our 'beach' at 'sandy' resort soon turn from a very narrow beach to NO beach! The loungers are quickly folded away so they don't float away and we head for the pool instead, wondering if maybe the name of this resort could be slightly misleading...perhaps they should change it to not-so-sandy resort...!  Oh well, bye bye tiny beach, hello pool! :) And then it rains (sigh).

Day 3 on Koh Samui and we bus into town where we book some tickets to Surat Thani train station for the following morning (from there it's a monster trek to the north and Chiang Mai). Travel stuff done we head down the road to Chaweng looking for the world famous Chaweng Beach. We can't find it. Just as the hunt for the beach is warming up we got stopped by some english folks with prize scratch card things from a nearby hotel and surprise surprise we win!!! We have won either $4000, an iPad or a holiday at the hotel! Hmmmm. It starts raining so we humour them and let them take us to the hotel (out of the rain) to see what we have won - when we arrive there is no one available and they tell us to come back in 2 hours..... We don't, the rain has stopped you see. We peel off the sticker on our winning ticket thingy and discover to our delight that we would have won a holiday at their hotel! Who would've guessed it! Haha, scams everywhere but we dodged the rain for a bit :D Off we go to see a big Buddha instead. He is lovely. And gold.

After we finish looking at stuff around the Buddha we catch a taxi home. He takes us to the right beach but the wrong end of it...! We don't mind as he has dropped us in a nice fishermen's market (with no fishermen, and no market!?!) with lots of bars, shops and food. After checking it out we walk back along the beach, it has soft sand and we sink to the ankles with each step - it soon turns into a struggle to walk the length of the beach back to the resort. We should have never quit the gym! Later that night we drink cocktails in the resort and watch a couple of singers who must only know Cat Stevens songs. Oh and the spring rolls Ian had for lunch decide to poison him. Bye sleep, hello toilet.
