We spent two nights on Phuket and didn't really enjoy it too much. Perhaps it was because we really liked Koh Lanta and were missing it, or maybe it was because the weather was a bit overcast and dull. Either way, we started to plan our escape pretty much as soon as we arrived. Our guesthouse was called The Pineapple and its English-Thai owners were most helpful and friendly, our room was large with mod-cons and Karon beach was just down the road. Karon beach is huge. And gold(en). And when you walk on the sand it squeaks. Yes, you did read that correctly, the sand squeaks. It's like walking on halumi cheese. We don't know why it squeaks, it just does. Thankfully we were also far enough away from seedy Patong Beach to only see a handful of sex-tourists!

Oh, and Phuket also has a Big Buddha perched on one of its high hills. He can be seen from most areas of the island but unfortunately he isn't gold, he's white. Oh well.

All-in-all it was a fairly pleasant place but we just weren't feeling it. It was a bit too towny (bangkok-ish) and I guess the secluded beach feel was still calling to us after our spell in Koh Lanta and the beauty of Phi Phi's beaches were still fresh in our minds.

Well day one was fairly uneventful, but on day two we took the local bus (an experience in itself) into Phuket town as there was a vegetarian festival in progress. It runs for a few days and the streets are fully crammed with stalls selling countless different foods. We ate some potato rosti type things (delicious), spring rolls and some sausage things with nuts (or beans?) in. We even had some deep fried banana that day! It was all very very tasty :)

Fed to bursting, we got a taxi to the bus station to buy bus/ferry tickets to Koh Samui, which is on the opposite coast and a popular backpacker destination. Thinking the taxi was a little overpriced we walked back to Phuket town. We only got lost once and it took us much longer than expected... It turned out that stuff is much further away when you walk rather than drive! Our feet were in tatters by the time we returned to the Pineapple but we got to see much of the island and it was worth the stop in Phuket if only for the festival.

Bye Phuket, we won't miss you but thanks for the lovely street food. Next stop Koh Samui and another Big Buddha. We do hope he is gold.
