Day 2 on Phi Phi (pronounced pee pee, hehehehehe) and we decide to check out the beach which is a stones throw away from our new pad. So we get smothered in suncream and head off for a look. The beach is practically empty when we get there, only a few people here and there, not the masses we had expected. We have a sit down and then a swim. Well we say swim, what we mean is paddle. The water is warm, shallow and comes no higher than your waist (we suspect it is low tide), who knows when it finally gets deep but we walked a long way with little depth change. Ian likes this as he is not a strong swimmer. Anna holds his hand as he splashes.
Sitting back down we notice a small dog running about having a great time
As the sun begins to set we climb a million steps (there are definitely a million, we counted them) to reach Viewpoint One. A lookout point where you can watch the sun set behind the limestone cliffs framing the two main beaches of Phi Phi. Sweat is not the word for it. Rain is pouring out of our skin as we approach the veiwpoint. Our breath is ragged and the small bottle of orange we brought with us has long ago boiled away. The view from here is fantastic and as there is still another 30 min or so until sunset we decide to carry on to Viewpoint 2. Thankfully there are no more steps. What has replaced them is a concrete path at an angle of about 60degrees! With a final effort we push for the top and are rewarded with a truely spectacular view of the island. Twenty or more people had also negotiated the climb and soon we were all rewarded with the sun setting upon a beautiful landscape
Heading back to the beach for a bucket (literally a bucket filled with booze and a couple of straws! It even has a handle!) we crash down on some beanbags and watch some appallingly drunk people try to skip a burning skipping rope. It does not end well for many of them. One girl already has bandages on her leg, knee and arm and another man is trying repeatedly to 'get a go' of one of the flaming rods. After more fire acrobatics they set fire to a huge sign saying Woody Party and then we escape back to the room to bathe in aftersun.
