At 5.45am we were debating getting a taxi to the bus station or going down the lift and catching the local bus. The hotel staff, concerned for our safety, rang for a taxi without consulting us, which was probably as well as there were total weirdos out in the street chasing cars with sticks.
Salvador bus station has few eating places, and no menu or price list displayed, so we stayed hungry. The Real Express was one of those with suspension so soft that when it went round a curve it swayed until the bus sides must have nearly touched the road. It was also freezing. Barb got off 6 hours later in Lencois feeling seasick and cold.
It is unrelentingly hot here. The town has cobbled streets hard to walk on, and almost everything was shut up tight. Our efforts to find a tour agent open failed. The fellow who came to our pousada later offered us 3 trips, one with swimming holes and caves (been there, done that), one with a waterfall and more swimming holes, and one a long hike, only 27km he said. In this heat ? Madness. He claimed to speak English, but it was as bad as Barb's Portuguese. We are thinking about it (=no).
By evening it had cooled down and the place was alive, people everywhere and eating and drinking in the roads and plazas. While checking our email a very large toad came in to see if a computer was available. Seeing all were occupied it crossed the road to have a look at the earings.
