Saturday May 5th 2007 Chachpoyas
We found the tourist office and collected a brochure about Chachapoyas, which almost managed to disguise the fact that there is almost nothing to do here. It is just a rather boring little colonial town, with the ruins of Keulap probably the only reason for coming. The other places mentioned on the brochure turn out to need, on reading the fine print, 3 hours by taxi then 12 hours by mule, or similar. We booked a tour to Keulap for tomorrow. You can get there independently but the bus goes at 4am, and you have to spend a night at a local village, about which we could find no information. Barb, not feeling 100% yet again, read a book and snoozed, Pete went to check out the town sights, and found none. After lunch we walked uphill to find a spring, but this has not been 'beautified' with landscaping and was hardly worth the effort. At least they make decent cake in this place, and a huge piece of cake and a coffee costs only $1 or so.After tomorrow we have Monday to kill. Our next town is Celendin, en route for Cajamarca, and buses only go Tuesday and Friday (at 5am, of course). The tourist office said the road is horrible.
