Monday 23rd 2007Today we discussed the pros and cons of cancelling the trip and going back to Iquitos. We decided to stay on, but we would have another night in the cabin. We went canoeing for the day where we saw lots of monkeys, some birds and lots of interesting plantlife. During the day the insect burden was reasonable. However, after many hours on the boat, both of our botts were beginning to get very uncomfortable sitting on the wooden plank. We had to return to the camp when rain threatened, and shortly after it began to bucket down. Silly us, we only had brollies, not ponchos, and 90% of our clothes got absolutely soaked. After lunch we went for another walk in the jungle. We found a family of woodpeckers nesting in a hole in a tree near the campsite. In the evening went on a night canoe trip, that was good especially for the sounds of the jungle. Watchful eyes also spotted one noisy frog, a few bats, several nocturnal parrots that flew like ghosts over our heads, a spider that ran over the water, and a tiny bird in a nest
