Just arrived on the Brazilian side of the border. At the border I met a couple of Chilean guys who had been here before and they were able to help me quite a bit. For example, the station at which the bus arrived is not the station from which my continuing bus will depart tonight. (I'll be taking a night bus to Porto Alegre tonight.) These very nice Chilean guys were going to the long distance bus station (Rodoviario), so I joined them. Once I got there, I booked the bus for tonight at 7 p.m. and I had planned to just hang around the station and kill time for the eight hours before my bus departs. But the tourist information guy, who spoke perfect English due to having lived in Los Angeles for many years, advised me that it would be much nicer to spend time in town, where there was a bigger selection of restaurants and places to walk around.

So I went to the nice, big supermarket that he recommended - right near the bus station - and I had one of those "pay by the kilo" lunches. I was able to eat all that I wanted for only 2 dollars - even cheaper than in Argentina. I'll go back to that supermarket in the evening before my bus leaves and load up on sandwiches for the 13 hour ride.
