Entry 3 of 27 | show all | print this entry

Just a brief stop to refuel the plane and change the crew at the tropical island Bonaire in the Caribbean.

On the flight from Amsterdam to Peru, I met a very nice Peruvian young lady who is married to a Swiss man. She has been living in Switzerland for 6 years and could speak perfect German, so it was in that language that we spoke to each other. (Funny, isn't it - a Peruvian and an American speaking to each other in German!) The reason I spoke to her on the plane was because I saw her learning English - with her notes written in German! I was too curious to resist. As it turned out she had been having a rough time at the Amsterdam airport. She missed her connection to South America due to her first flight being delayed - and the airline refused to look after her. So she had to spend one night sleeping in the airport and another night sleeping at an expensive hotel - at her own expense - before finally getting on the plane for a three-week visit to her family in Nasca, Peru. Her husband will write a nasty letter to the airline - and I hope that they get some compensation. I know I would have expected it if it had been me.
